  • Visit Asiatic Library, offers a glimpse into one of India’s most prestigious and historic institutions. Established in 1804, this library is a treasure trove of rare manuscripts, ancient books, and historical documents that reflect the rich cultural and intellectual heritage of India. Located in the heart of Mumbai, the library’s stunning colonial architecture and serene atmosphere make it a perfect place for book lovers and history enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re exploring the collection or simply admiring the grand surroundings, the Asiatic Library promises a unique and enriching experience.
  • Coffee or Tea at Café Universal. Their building is also an ancient, vintage type, which matches with all the other buildings in the vicinity. Café Britannia is another famous restaurant at Ballard Estate. (*Travellers Choice).
  • Visit Ballard Bunder all the way to Peshawar! The boat trains, as they were called, used to transport the general public, troops, and cargo all over the Indian Subcontinent.
  • Visit Neville House is the headquarters of Bombay Dyeing, one of India’s biggest producer of textiles. It belongs to the Wadia family, who built ships and docks in Bombay way back in 1736 to lay the foundation of a massive ship building empire.
  • Visit Hamilton Studios, this studio has photographed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, J.R.D. Tata, Zeenat Aman, and many famous personalities. This was the go-to place for everyone to get themselves photographed in ancient Bombay.
  • Visit Pathé India, this is the early headquarters of Pathé India, the Indian arm of the multinational company Pathé Freres. They were one of the first film production and cinematography companies in the world.
  • Visit the Grand Hotel symbolized the era of modern and luxurious living. While staying there they would provide you with anonymity meaning, you did not have to know who is staying in the next room of your hotel. This is common now; but back in the 1900s, this was a new concept.
  • Visit Port Trust War Memorial. The Bombay Port Trust used to send their troops and goods for the First World War. This memorial was erected to commemorate all the employees who lost their lives in the war. Bombay Port Trust during WW1 (1914 – 1918) and its employees who died whilst serving the allied forces. A plaque reminds us: “1,870,000 troops and personnel embarked and disembarked at the docks … and 2,228,000 tons of military stores were shipped from the port.”
  • Visit Mackinnon Mackenzie, this houses the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Very close to Ballard Bunder, this gave an amazing London- like feel to the city.
  • Visit Scindia House, this is the headquarters of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, one of India’s oldest shipping companies. After independence, they got a boost as Indian companies were favored by the Indian Government. National Maritime Day is celebrated on 5th April every year remembering Scindia’s remarkable achievement.
  • Immerse yourself in a private art gallery at IF.BE. I.F.BE is seeks to be plinth that pulls people from Architecture, Design, and Arts to meet with the community. The 10,000- square-foot space is segmented into five distinct sections: The courtyard around the banyan tree will be The Banyan Tree Café; The Substation is the perfect place for a smaller display or to introduce a larger exhibition. The Space: The ICE, and The Native Bombay Restaurant, The Native Lounge, and The Cathedral: Open, Grand and Voluminous connect to the Ice Factory, making it suitable for large event as well.
  • Visit The Prince of Wales Seamen’s Club, is located near the main docks of Mumbai Port and provides accommodation, lodging and recreational facilities to seafarers of all ranks and nationalities that are either in Port or those that transit through Mumbai. Dates back to 1837 when the Bombay Sailor Friends Association started at Dhobitalao. The current building, to your left, was opened by H R H the Prince of Wales, on 20 November, 1921. The Club aims “To provide for the accommodation, recreation, and general welfare of seafarers of all ranks and nationalities that are either in Port or transiting through Mumbai.”
  • Visit New Custom House in Mumbai is a landmark that stands at the intersection of history, architecture, and trade. Built in the late 19th century, this imposing structure was designed to handle the growing demands of maritime commerce during British rule. Its Victorian-era architecture, with its grand façade and intricate details, is a testament to the era’s design elegance. Situated near the bustling port area, the New Custom House is not only a hub for customs operations but also a symbol of Mumbai’s historical importance as a major port city. A visit here offers a unique insight into India’s colonial past and maritime legacy.
  • Visit Darabshaw House, if you were not rich and famous around 60 years ago, you would most probably not have been able to land a room at the Grand Hotel. Plan B would be a room at the Regent Hotel which was once housed in Darabshaw House, the lovely edifice to your left as you face the WW1 Memorial, and now an office building.
