HOW TO REACH DAROJI SLOTH BEAR SANCTUARY
  • Road: The sanctuary is located about 15 km from Hampi. It can be reached by hiring a taxi or a private vehicle from Hampi or nearby cities like Hospet, Bellary or Hubli.
  • Rail: The nearest railway station is the Hospet Junction (20 km).
  • Air: The nearest airport to the sanctuary is the Jindal Vijaynagar Airport in Toranagallu.

  • Dress for comfort. Do avoid bright colours and stick to muted shades of green, black, grey and brown. The more you meld with the background, the better.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes sports shoes.

  • You’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors. Don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, torch, etc.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL INTO BELLARY AIRPORT

  • Arrive at Bellary Airport (closest airport to Hampi), get picked up by our representative who will transfer you to your hotel.

Car Journey from Bellary Airport to Hampi Heritage and Wilderness Resort 1 hr 30 min (63.8 km) via NH 67.

  • Visit the sanctuary is between 2.00 P M and 6.00 P M on all days to watch the Bears one must be in the watch-tower on a hillock and sit quietly to look at the Bears descending from the opposite Karadikallu Gudda. This hillock has hundreds of cave where the Bears take shelter.
  • Watch eight species of Bears in the world. Indian Sloth Bear is confined to India and Sri Lanka only. Its scientific (Zoological) name is Melursus ursimus. It has long, dark unkempt coat of hair with a characteristic v-shaped chevron on its chest.
  • Visit the iconic Stone Chariot and the legendary musical pillars within the Vijaya Vittala Temple: which, as the legend goes, was built for Lord Vishnu himself and the ancient Virupaksha Temple which is believed to have hosted the betrothal of Lord Shiva and Parvati; and countless other monuments steeped in history are what stand as background to the Hampi Heritage & Wilderness Resort.
  • Watch a Wild life movie and enjoy a campfire at the resort. Enjoy dinner at the resort.

DAY 2EXPLORE THE DAROJI SLOTH BEAR SANCTUARY

  • After breakfast at the resort, proceed to explore the various species of animals and birds at Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary.
  • Take a jeep safari on the 8 km stretch of Daroji Bear Sanctuary, into the forest is also a good opportunity to spot the avian residents of the area including countless peafowl, spur fowl, yellow-throated bulbuls, sand grouse, quails, sirkeer malkohas and stone-curlews.
  • Return to the resort for lunch and short time of relaxation in the lap of nature.
  • Take a walk through these forests which takes you through the rich biodiversity of dry forests, home to rare birds such as floricans, partridges and others. For those wanting to try their luck, the forests are populated by a rich and thriving population of Sloth Bears and an equally healthy number of leopards. A safari here can match its famous cousins in Kabini and Bandipur for the sheer variety of stunning landscapes.

DAY 3DEPARTURE

  • After breakfast at the hotel, proceed to visit some monuments of Hampi which are World UNESCO Heritage Sites.
  • Visit the heritage sites at Hampi which is broadly divided into the Sacred Centre, the Royal Centre, Urban Core and Suburban sites. Across the River Tungabhadra lies Anegundi, known as Kishkinda in the Ramayana with its old-world charm – quaint houses, aqueducts irrigating its paddy fields and mythological milestones.
  • Proceed towards the airport. On your way you can stop over at a local café or restaurant for lunch.

During the safari, don’t push the driver to take you closer to the animals. Allow the animals to relax and take it easy while you enjoy yourself.

6. CHOOSING A GREEN ACCOMMODATION

Make sure to pick a hotel that uses green practices when you are on vacation.
